Atlantic League -- 1907 : Rosters
"Talk about 'uneasy lies the head that wears the crown',"
said the manager of an Atlantic League club yesterday. "It isn't in it
with the head that's running a team in an 'outlaw' league. When the
manager of one of these teams goes to bed at night, he doesn't know how
many of his star players will be on the job in the morning. No sooner
does one of the players of the Atlantic League show first-class form
than he receives tempting offers from other of the minor leagues, or one
of the major organizations. If the player decides to accept the offer,
there is no way on earth that his manager can prevent him from jumping
his contract.
"Of course, we sometimes hold back two weeks pay on some
of our best players, but that does not amount to anything because the
manager of the club that wants the player makes that good. When an
'outlaw' team gets hold of a good ambitious player who develops into a
star, the tempter comes along and tells him that he can not afford to
waste his time playing for an 'outlaw' club, and if he does his chances
will be ruined forever. He puts it in such a way that the player
generally yields."
--Atlantic League Manager, quoted in Elizabeth Daily
